The Hanged Man - Foresight

I vividly remember seeing this card after having my first reading, given to me by a good friend.  My impression of this image of a man hanging upside down was very disconcerting. He looked like he was suffering. I was certain this couldn't be good at all, but I was very wrong in spite of my visceral reaction.

Being a Major Arcana card the Hanged Man has a positive spiritual message and urges us to take a time out, and symbolizes sacrifice for a greater good, acceptance and trust.

I was hangin' with the Hummingbirds this morning sitting outside on my front porch. As I watched them buzzing, darting around, they reminded me of that hyper state we can all find ourselves in when we are waiting in the fear and anxiety, that often is a result of not putting our trust in the unseen workings of the unconscious, while waiting in hope of a new and better life.

We are spinning our wheels or like the Hummingbirds are rapidly flapping our wings, or hanging in mid-air, and seemingly not going anywhere. Some times we have to just have to stop and have a rest.

The Hanged Man is the natural outgrowth from the Wheel of Fortune. Here's Prometheus, who's name means 'foresight'. He was a Titan, who had the gift of prophecy and he had great sympathy for mankind and made a voluntarily sacrifice for a greater good. He doesn't look disturbed, worried or even uncomfortable in spite of his very precarious position.

We too can find ourselves in the same situation where we must have a real faith, which can only be gained through risking ourselves in life and we must be willing to trust in that Other, which knows better than our ego, what is right, and necessary for our development and growth.

We decide whether we move forward or back or just stay still. We are never completely standing still  in life. We are either going ahead  or backwards. It's up to us to decide. Taking time to withdraw, rest and reassess is an excellent way to find discernment.

Wheel of Fortune - Would Life be Easier as a Cat?

I had the blessing and privilege of doing another reading yesterday, which I am very grateful for. Providing readings for people, gives me the opportunity to practice my skills, and it makes me feel good to know I am providing an important service, that makes a difference in people's lives, including my own.

Being involved with Tarot over the past eight years has been a great blessing in my life. It has deepened my relationship with myself, with others, and with the God of my own understanding.

Today fittingly as always, I drew The Wheel of Fortune, the card that addresses how life is a series of good or bad and both.

How I have been experiencing my own wheel of fortune lately, I will spare you to gory details, but the day before yesterday, I had reached a saturation point with things that have been building up over the past month. I do take responsibility for how I contributed to this situation, but none the less, it was so difficult, psychologically and even physically that I was seriously beginning to wonder how I was going to cope with the next few days, and then finally, my prayers were answered yesterday.

I suddenly went from feeling desperate, discouraged and even physically sick, to feeling elated and happy and so very grateful. The struggles and the blessings that have happened to me over the past month or so, has got me thinking about life and I don't think there is any other card that sums up just what what life is like, than The Wheel of Fortune. It is all about ups and downs, the highs and lows we all experience on our journey.

Would life be easier if I was a cat? Maybe, my brain certainly would be different, but surely it wouldn't be so interesting. I wouldn't get to experience the phases of life that bring change, a depth of growth and healing, and that always brings with it, many blessings to be so grateful for, but I might get some good belly rubs.

Wheel of Fortune - One Day I Walk

I've been nursing a cold between snow storms, here in the heart of rural Nova Scotia. Winter has really arrived now, after having some above normal temperatures for many months. Though I'm never thrilled about the dead of Winter's arrival, I'm slowly learning to accept it and adapt. It's only been 22 years living here in the country, so I guess I'm feeling like I'm finally making progress! I've always been a slow learner, especially when it comes to accepting the things I don't like.

It's the people, places, and the things, we are really challenged by, that allow for the most valuable life lessons learned. It's certainly always been my experience.

Depending on our philosophy or spiritual beliefs, we might have the perspective toward our life's journey, as being a path that we are on. We walk a road of valleys and hills, with craggy sharp rocks, and pastoral countryside along the way, and like a pilgrim we are headed toward home. This is true for me. I'm making another place my home, not of this world.

I am reminded of 1980 when I was in the grand library in downtown Toronto, listening to an old archival Smithsonian Folkways recording by a Capella choir in the mountains of Kentucky sing, I am a Poor Pilgrim of Sorrow. It took me a while, but I found it on line.

Bruce Cockburn's One Day I Walk is the perfect song to listen to on a cold and snowy Winter's day.

Wheel of Fortune - Acceptance

There is definitely change ahead when I draw the Wheel of Fortune. What kind of change? I can only speculate, and that's not so clear. Only good fortune is hoped for at best. I would be wasting my time projecting into the future, and I am no fortune teller. Growth and a new phase is assured regardless of which way the wheel turns.

I think about the future a fair amount, and have hopes and dreams like any one. But the big thing is, is taking charge of what it is I want to actualize in my life. This can be the hard part. So I have been busily doing lots inventory, goal setting, and trying to crystallize what it is I want to do and accomplish. What I don't accomplish I have to accept responsibility for, good or bad.

I must say I am struggling to get past the Winter weather which is a really challenge psychologically and living alone I stay in my head. Thank goodness I have a writing outlet. Winter has always been something to overcome. I've never really liked it, and as I got older I disliked it even more. I don't remember even liking Winter as a kid. I do remember before I started school, being left outside for long periods of time at the baby sitters, along with another kid. The woman who was minding us had a daughter the same age as her cousin and me. We were both left outside in the cold while her mother allowed her daughter to come back in the house. I never told my mother. Perhaps this might have something to do with the reason I don't like Winter, and have a unpleasant residual memory. I certainly relate Winter with being cold and dark which I believe directly affects my mood along with having a touch of Seasonal Affective Disorder.

So goes the Wheel of Fortune, life is not perfect, full of big and small messes, but it is a beautiful life. Some days are diamonds, some days are stones and we can't have one without the other. Acceptance is the key to all my difficulties.

Wheel of Fortune - Four Directions Prayer

As 2014 comes to a close, I think the Wheel of Fortune is in sync with the nearing arrival of the New Year, 2015. The Wheel of Fortune reminds me of the First Nations Medicine Wheel, and the Four Directions Prayer that I love, and wanted to share it.

FOUR DIRECTIONS PRAYER

Creator, It is I,

Thank you for today's sunrise,

for the breath and life within me,

and for all of your creations.

Creator, Hear my prayer, and

honour my prayer.

As the day begins with the rising sun,

I ask, Spirit Keeper of The East,

Brother Eagle, Be with me.

Fly high as you carry my prayers

to the Creator.

May I have eyes as sharp as yours,

so I am able to see truth and hope

on the path that I have chosen.

Guide my step and give me

courage to walk the circle of

my life with honesty and dignity.

Spirit Keeper of the South, Wolf,

Be with me...

Help me to remember to love;

and feel compassion for all mankind.

Help me to walk my path with joy

and love for myself, for others

for the four legged, the winged ones,

the planets and all creations upon

Mother Earth.

Show me it is right for me

to make decisions with my head

even if at times, my heart becomes hurt.

Help me to grow and nurture myself worth in all ways.

Spirit Keeper, of the West, Brown Bear, be with me.

Bring healing to the people I love and to myself

Bring healing into balance the physical,

mental, and spiritual, so I am

able to know my place on this

earth, in life and in death

Heal my body, heal my mind

and bring light, joy and awareness to my spirit.

Spirit Keeper of the North, White

Buffalo, Be with me.

As each day passes, help me to

surrender, with grace, the things

of my youth.

Help me to listen to the quiet,

and find serenity and comfort in silences as they become longer.

Give me wisdom so I am able to

make wise choices in all things

which are put in front of me,

And when time for my change of worlds has come,

Let me go peacefully, without

regrets, for the things I neglected

to do as I walked along my path.

Mother Earth

Thank you for your beauty,

And for all you have given me.

Remind me never to take from you more than I need, and

remind me to always give back

more than I take.

The Wheel of Fortune - Change

Ruled by Jupiter, the planet of expansion, change is the topic of the day, which was confirmed for me by The Wheel of Fortune, the card I drew this morning.

We all wish and hope for positive change, however it comes in all forms, be it positive or negative. Depending on how we embrace change, and our attitude determines the outcome. We choose to either react or respond, depending on how we feel or perceive this change.

I am not one to believe in luck or superstition, but I do believe in synchronicity, and that things develop and unfold the way they are meant to, as a matter of faith. The Wheel of Fortune works within the mysterious workings of the unconscious, and the intelligent movement of the hidden Self, bringing a new phases in life.

I definitely am feeling I have reached a new phase as of late. I pray that I can be ready, open to, and embrace change with willingness, and responsibility.

" The secret of change is to focus all of your energy not of fighting the old, but on building on the new. "
                                                                                                   - Socrates

I found this just now, a quote from Joseph Campbell, and thought it was very appropriate for this post on the Wheel of Fortune on the topic of change.

“We must be willing to get rid of
the life we’ve planned, so as to have
the life that is waiting for us.
The old skin has to be shed
before the new one can come.

If we fix on the old, we get stuck.
When we hang onto any form,
we are in danger of putrefaction.
Hell is life drying up.”
